Teeth whitening myths we hear every week
Shop kits vs clinic whitening, enamel safety, and why crowns do not bleach — straight answers from the surgery.

Whitening is one of the most requested treatments — and one of the most misunderstood. Here are the myths we hear most often in Richmond, and what the evidence actually supports.
Myth: shop-bought strips are the same as clinic whitening
Over-the-counter products can lighten mild staining, but strength, tray fit, and gum protection vary widely. Clinic whitening starts with a suitability check so restorations, gum health, and sensitivity are not ignored.
Myth: whitening damages enamel
Professionally supervised whitening at appropriate concentrations does not dissolve enamel. Temporary sensitivity is common and usually settles quickly when wear time is tailored.
Myth: crowns and fillings will whiten too
Restorative materials do not lighten like natural enamel. We check shade matching first so you are not surprised after treatment.
